Barbaric Ritual

Do you ever consider the wishbone’s pain
The constant tug and pull of life
The to and fro of angst

Does the bone ever wish
For a different lot in life
Does it seek revenge on
What humans call humanity

We savagely rip into the burnt carcass
Like a barbarian
To dig out a bone
And cast a child-like wish
Never wishing for rebirth of the bird
You just mutilated

We fear the break
Hoping the other will fall short
Knowing if we fail
Everything we know and love
Will end
